Wedoany.com Report-May 31, Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding, a leading Chinese shipyard, has launched a major new facility on Changxing Island, north of Shanghai, to enhance its production of liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers. The $2.5 billion, 432-hectare yard is designed to increase the state-owned company’s annual LNG carrier output from six to 10 vessels once fully operational.

As a key site of the China State Shipbuilding Corporation, Hudong-Zhonghua has a strong legacy in the industry, notably constructing China’s first LNG carrier 17 years ago. The new facility strengthens the company’s capacity to meet growing global demand for LNG carriers, supporting the maritime transport of clean energy.

The expansion aligns with broader efforts across China’s shipbuilding sector to modernize and increase production capabilities. The new yard is equipped with advanced technology to improve efficiency and output, positioning Hudong-Zhonghua as a leader in the global LNG carrier market.

Hudong-Zhonghua’s managing director, Chen Jian, commented on the milestone: “This new facility marks a significant step in advancing our production capabilities and meeting the increasing demand for LNG carriers. We are committed to delivering high-quality vessels that support global energy needs while maintaining the highest standards of innovation and reliability.”

The facility’s commissioning reflects China’s ongoing investment in its shipbuilding infrastructure, with the country holding a significant share of the global ship orderbook. This growth underscores the industry’s role in supporting international trade and energy transport, particularly for LNG, which is critical for clean energy transitions worldwide.

The Changxing Island yard is expected to streamline production processes, enabling Hudong-Zhonghua to deliver vessels more efficiently while adhering to international quality and environmental standards. This development enhances China’s ability to supply advanced LNG carriers, contributing to global energy supply chains.
