Wedoany.com Report-May 26, Ørsted has completed the installation of all 24 suction bucket jacket (SBJ) foundations for the 337.1 MW Greater Changhua 2b offshore wind farm, located 35-60 kilometers off Changhua County, Taiwan. The installations, carried out by Heerema Marine Contractors’ heavy-lift vessel Aegir, began in early April 2025 and finished ahead of schedule in just over a month.
The SBJ foundations utilize suction bucket technology, which eliminates the need for piling and securely anchors structures to the seabed. This innovative approach enhances efficiency and minimizes environmental impact during installation. The foundations were supplied by Petrovietnam Technical Services Corporation (PTSC) and HSG Sungdong, with marshalling and lifting activities managed by Mammoet-Giant Taiwan, a joint venture between Mammoet and Giant Heavy Machinery Service.
Construction of the 920 MW Greater Changhua 2b and 4 offshore wind farms began in February 2025. Ørsted announced progress on social media, stating: “Meanwhile, foundation installation at the Greater Changhua 4 Offshore Wind Farm is also progressing. We’ll continue to make the most of the favorable weather windows and push forward with full momentum.” The timely completion of the 2b foundations reflects Ørsted’s efficient project management and favorable weather conditions.
The Greater Changhua 2b and 4 wind farms will feature Siemens Gamesa 14-236 DD turbines, the largest of their kind in the Taiwan Strait, delivering significant clean energy capacity. These projects strengthen Taiwan’s renewable energy infrastructure, supporting the region’s transition to sustainable power sources and contributing to local economic growth through job creation and industry partnerships.
Ørsted’s commitment to advancing offshore wind energy in Taiwan is evident in the rapid progress of the Greater Changhua projects. The successful installation of the SBJ foundations at 2b marks a key milestone, positioning the wind farm to deliver reliable, renewable energy upon completion. The ongoing work at Greater Changhua 4 further demonstrates Ørsted’s dedication to expanding clean energy solutions in the region.
