UGM Enlists Telkom Indonesia’s Undersea Cables for Earthquake Detection

Wedoany.com Report-May 27, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) and PT Telkom Indonesia Persero Tbk have partnered to develop an advanced earthquake early warning system using Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) technology. This system leverages Telkom’s undersea optical cable infrastructure to detect seismic activity in real time, offering a significant advancement in disaster management, particularly for mitigating risks from potential megathrust earthquakes in Indonesia.

The DAS-based system identifies primary waves (P-waves), which travel faster than the more damaging secondary waves (S-waves), enabling warnings seconds to minutes before the main quake. Professor Kuwat Triyana explained: “The DAS-based earthquake detector works by sensing primary waves (P-waves), which appear earlier than the more destructive secondary waves (S-waves).” This early detection provides critical time for evacuation and preparedness, enhancing safety measures.

Real-time data processing, integrated with geospatial systems, supports swift and coordinated disaster response. The system optimizes existing infrastructure, specifically Telkom’s undersea optical cables spanning from Sabang to Merauke, which cross active subduction zones along the southern coasts of Java, Nusa Tenggara, and the western coast of Sumatra. By using these cables as detection tools, the system extends coverage to deep-sea areas without requiring additional sensors, improving efficiency and reach.

Ririek Adriansyah, President Director of PT Telkom Indonesia, highlighted the collaboration’s broader impact: “This initiative enables substantial efficiency by leveraging existing infrastructure, namely, the undersea optical cables stretching from Sabang to Merauke.” He noted that the system not only aids disaster mitigation but also strengthens the resilience of critical national infrastructure against natural threats, contributing to long-term sustainability.

The collaboration between UGM and Telkom demonstrates a practical application of digital technology for disaster risk reduction. By utilizing existing optical cable networks, the system provides a cost-effective solution for monitoring seismic activity in high-risk areas, supporting Indonesia’s efforts to enhance public safety and protect vital infrastructure. The initiative aligns with national goals to improve disaster preparedness and response through innovative technology.
