Wedoany.com Report-May 27, Inyanga Marine Energy Group, a UK-based company, has awarded a contract to Hutchinson Engineering, also from the UK, to fabricate critical components for its HydroWing tidal energy device. The components will be part of a 20 MW tidal energy array at the Morlais site off Anglesey, Wales, marking a significant step in renewable energy development.
The contract includes the fabrication of a 120-ton structural steel foundation frame and rear nacelle, involving welding, painting, and coating to ensure durability for 25 years underwater. Each HydroWing unit is designed to generate 1.2 MW. Fabrication will occur at Hutchinson Engineering’s facility in Cheshire, with final assembly completed quayside in Wales. The first unit is scheduled for deployment in the first quarter of 2026.
Richard Parkinson, CEO of Inyanga Marine Energy Group, stated: “Hutchinson Engineering have all the engineering expertise and ingenuity required to turn our innovative tidal stream technology concept into reality. The tidal energy scheme at Morlais is the largest of its kind in the world and this is a once in a generation opportunity to prove the full potential of tidal energy, really putting Wales on the map as a global pioneer in renewable energy.”
Andy Billcliff, CEO of Menter Môn Morlais, said: “The awarding of the first fabrication contract marks a key step forward in the development of tidal energy at Morlais, bringing economic and environmental gains to both Wales and the UK while showcasing tidal energy’s potential on the global stage.” Steve Adams, Managing Director of Hutchinson Engineering, added: “We are extremely excited about winning the contract for this groundbreaking project. We pride ourselves on all our fabrications having a positive impact on the world and so this will be a flagship project for us.”
The HydroWing system features a seabed structure with turbine-equipped “wings” that generate power from both incoming and outgoing tides. Its design is cost-effective and scalable for large-scale production. In May 2025, the Welsh Government invested £2 million (approximately €2.36 million) in Inyanga Marine Energy Group, supporting its projects in Wales, France, Southeast Asia, and Canada.
This initiative positions Wales as a leader in tidal energy, contributing to sustainable energy production and economic growth while advancing global renewable energy innovation.
