Wedoany.com Report-Jun 1, The Ashford Borough Council in Kent, southeastern England, has partnered with Kensa, a UK-based ground source heat pump (GSHP) specialist, to implement a geothermal heating project aimed at reducing energy costs for residents. The initiative will introduce sustainable heating solutions to 74 homes in the villages of Appledore and Charing, replacing less efficient oil, electric, and gas heating systems.

The project involves drilling multiple boreholes to a depth of 100 meters, equipped with systems to capture geothermal heat. This energy will be channeled to heat pumps, which elevate low-grade heat to higher temperatures suitable for cost-effective space heating and hot water in residential properties. The system is designed to provide reliable, low-carbon heating, significantly reducing energy expenses for households.

Community feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. “I think this is a great idea. Our electric storage heaters are expensive to run, and I’m looking forward to saving the pennies and having a warmer, more comfortable home,” said Craig Godden, a resident of the Heathside area in Appledore.

“Storage heaters are costing me a fortune, so this is a very good idea. My daughter is jealous that I’m getting ground source heat pumps fitted,” said Peter Simpson, another resident.

“We’re excited to collaborate with Ashford on this brilliant project, helping to decarbonize their properties while providing residents with a reliable, highly efficient low-carbon heating solution,” said Stuart Gadsden, Commercial Director at Kensa. “Our ground source heat pumps are among the most energy-efficient and sustainable heating options available, and, depending on the system they replace, residents could benefit from significantly lower energy bills and a heavily reduced carbon footprint.”

This initiative is part of a broader effort by the Ashford Borough Council to retrofit approximately 700 homes with energy-saving measures, supported by £5.1 million from the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund Wave 2 and an additional £6.2 million from the council. Over the past 18 months, improvements such as cavity wall insulation, external wall insulation, new windows and doors, underfloor insulation, air source heat pumps, and solar panels have been implemented.

Cllr Noel Ovenden, Council Leader and Portfolio Holder for Housing, stated: “These measures will cut carbon emissions, help reduce energy demand, and give residents more money in their pockets from cheaper energy bills. We’re working closely with our tenants to ensure they understand how the GSHP systems work and to recognize the tremendous benefits they will enjoy because of these exciting improvements.”

The project underscores Ashford’s commitment to sustainable living, enhancing energy efficiency, and improving residents’ quality of life through innovative heating solutions.
