Wedoany.com Report-May 28, The UK has enhanced mobile connectivity in its renowned beauty spots and national parks, improving access for tourists, hikers, and local residents. Over 50 mobile masts, previously limited to EE customers and emergency 999 calls, have been upgraded to support all mobile network operators. These upgrades minimize environmental impact by utilizing existing masts, reducing disruption to the natural surroundings.

Covering an area equivalent to 66,470 football pitches, more than half of these masts provide new 4G coverage to areas of outstanding natural beauty and national parks. This development benefits thousands of residents and visitors in remote communities, including the North York Moors National Park, parts of the Southern Upland Way, and the Shropshire Hills. Enhanced connectivity supports route planning, live weather updates, and safer outdoor experiences while boosting local tourism and economic growth.

The initiative is part of the Shared Rural Network program, a collaboration between the UK government and mobile network operators to improve rural connectivity. Sir Chris Bryant, Telecoms Minister, stated: “The growth potential of our areas of outstanding natural beauty must not be stunted by patchy internet. This milestone is a major step forward for better connectivity for all corners of the UK, meaning everyone can reap the benefits of the digital age.”

Ben Roome, CEO of Mova, added: “This is a big milestone for rural mobile coverage. Thanks to strong collaboration between government and industry, 50 publicly funded masts are now live — including this one in Upper Chapel — helping to close the mobile coverage gap for residents, businesses, and visitors.” Since the program’s launch, coverage from all four operators has increased from 66% to 81% of the UK, an area equivalent to Wales and Northern Ireland combined.

The upgrades align with the government’s Plan for Change, aiming to enhance economic opportunities and connectivity in rural areas. An additional 50 government-funded sites in England, Wales, and Scotland are targeted for upgrades by March 2026, further expanding reliable 4G access. This initiative supports local economies, promotes sustainable tourism, and ensures rural communities benefit from modern digital infrastructure.
