The agreement was formalized during a maritime forum held in Zhejiang in May 2025. This collaboration positions Ningbo Zhoushan Port as China’s leading hub for green shipping corridors, emphasizing sustainable practices in the global shipping industry.

The partnership aims to enhance low-carbon cooperation through innovative technologies. “We are committed to fostering sustainable development in shipping by leveraging advanced solutions,” a representative from Ningbo Zhoushan Port stated during the forum. The involved ports will work together to promote environmentally friendly practices, focusing on reducing carbon emissions and improving energy efficiency across their operations.

In addition to the European collaboration, Ningbo Zhoushan Port signed multiple agreements at the forum to strengthen its role in sustainable maritime development. These include a joint venture with COSCO Shipping Lines, a strategic cooperation agreement with Sinotrans, a strategic framework with COSCO Shipping Bulk, and a memorandum of cooperation with Abu Dhabi Ports Group. These partnerships aim to enhance operational efficiency and support the port’s sustainability goals.

Ningbo Zhoushan Port, formed in 2015 through the merger of Ningbo Port Group and Zhoushan Port Group, is the world’s busiest port in terms of cargo tonnage. Its strategic location in Zhejiang province makes it a critical hub for global trade, handling significant volumes of cargo annually. The port’s efforts to establish green shipping corridors reflect its commitment to balancing high operational demands with environmental responsibility.

In related developments, the Port of Shanghai signed an agreement with the Hamburg Port Authority in October 2024 to develop a green shipping corridor. The initiative focuses on providing shore power connections at all container terminals, promoting the use of eco-friendly fuels, and encouraging stakeholders—such as equipment suppliers, energy providers, cargo owners, terminals, and shipping companies—to support sustainable objectives. “This collaboration is a step toward a greener maritime future,” a Hamburg Port Authority spokesperson noted.
