Wedoany.com Report-May 30, Construction has begun on a 5-megawatt solar project in Madiro, located on Nosy Be, an island off Madagascar’s northwestern coast, as announced by the country’s Ministry of Energy and Hydrocarbons. The project includes 3.2 megawatt-hours of battery storage to ensure reliable energy supply. The ministry stated that the initiative will lower electricity costs for Nosy Be residents and enhance power generation, covering 85% of the island’s daytime energy needs and 41% at night.

The solar project is part of Madagascar’s Project 50 MW, a government-funded effort to expand the nation’s renewable energy capacity. This program aims to double the country’s electricity supply by 2030, promoting sustainable development and improving access to clean energy for local use. The ministry highlighted that the project will reduce reliance on expensive traditional energy sources, benefiting the local economy.

Additionally, a separate 3-megawatt solar plant is under construction elsewhere in Madagascar, with completion expected soon. These initiatives demonstrate the government’s commitment to strengthening renewable energy infrastructure nationwide. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Madagascar had 58 megawatts of installed solar capacity by the end of 2024, unchanged from 2023.

The Nosy Be project leverages the island’s abundant sunlight to meet local energy demands, with battery storage ensuring consistent power availability, especially at night. This enhances energy security and supports economic activities on the island without affecting trade dynamics. Andriamamonjy Mamy, Director General of Energy at the Ministry of Energy and Hydrocarbons, stated: “This solar project in Madiro marks a significant step toward sustainable energy for Nosy Be. By harnessing renewable resources, we are reducing costs and ensuring a brighter future for our communities.”

The development aligns with Madagascar’s goal of expanding clean energy access, contributing to environmental sustainability and improving quality of life for residents. The ongoing projects position the country as a growing player in renewable energy within the region.
