Wedoany.com Report-May 30, The Gambia office of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has launched a tender to hire a supervision contractor for a solar minigrid installation in a rural community. The contractor will oversee the project to ensure compliance with technical standards, review technical reports, and provide support during the tender process to select an installer. This includes offering technical input on bidder clarifications and participating in bid evaluations. Applications are due by June 10, 2025.

The scope of work involves ensuring that designs, materials, and workmanship meet contract requirements, maintaining high-quality execution of the minigrid installation. The project aligns with The Gambia’s goal to achieve 100% electrification by 2030 and increase renewable energy to 30% of total installed capacity. The solar minigrid will enhance access to clean energy in rural areas, supporting local electricity consumption without impacting trade dynamics.

Lamin Dibba, UNDP Gambia’s energy program coordinator, stated: “This solar minigrid project is a vital step toward sustainable energy access for rural communities. By ensuring quality installation, we are contributing to The Gambia’s renewable energy ambitions and improving lives.” The initiative reflects the UNDP’s commitment to supporting renewable energy development in the country, fostering economic and social benefits through reliable power supply.

According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), The Gambia had 25 megawatts of installed solar capacity by the end of 2024, a significant rise from 2 megawatts in 2023, driven by a 23-megawatt solar project commissioned in March 2024. In October 2024, a tender was announced for a 50-megawatt solar-plus-storage project, further advancing the country’s renewable energy efforts.

The solar minigrid project underscores The Gambia’s focus on expanding clean energy infrastructure to meet growing energy demands in underserved areas. By prioritizing quality oversight, the UNDP ensures the project’s long-term success, contributing to national sustainability goals and enhancing energy security for rural residents.
