Wedoany.com Report-Jun 3, Alotta Energy Chile, a subsidiary of Norway’s Alotta AS, has completed Chile’s first floating solar installation at Mowi’s Isla Huar salmon farm in the Los Lagos region. The project, part of Alotta’s Solar Hybrid platform, aims to reduce CO2 emissions and diesel use in offshore aquaculture. The system features a membrane-based design licensed from Ocean Sun.

The installation is projected to cut CO2 emissions by 350 tons annually, equivalent to planting 14,000 trees or preserving over 12 hectares of native forest. The solar energy generated powers the site directly or is stored in batteries, meeting up to 50% of the farm’s energy needs and reducing diesel consumption. Ricardo Gantenbein, Seawater Production Manager at Mowi Chile, stated: “For the industry to move toward more sustainable standards, working with suppliers and other partners to promote the incorporation of new technologies to minimize impacts is key. In this sense, this initiative marks an important step in the innovation of solutions to reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency in our daily operations.”

The project was developed in collaboration with AKVA group, which handled infrastructure integration and will manage maintenance, and Fjord Maritime, which provided the energy storage system. Alotta Energy Chile will supply power through an energy-as-a-service model. Kari-Elin Hildre, General Manager of Alotta Energy Chile, noted: “The solar hybrid technology, tested off the Norwegian coast, demonstrates that renewable energy is now ready to replace diesel in global aquaculture. Seeing it in operation in Chile is an achievement we are very proud of.”

Building on a prior deployment at a salmon farm in Northern Norway, Alotta is expanding its hybrid system globally, targeting off-grid and aquaculture markets with high fuel dependency. The technology offers a quieter, lower-emission alternative to traditional barge operations. In February, Alotta partnered with Emilsen Fisk to install the world’s northernmost floating solar power plant in Båfjordstranda, Norway.

Recently, Alotta’s parent company collaborated with Singapore-based Canopy Power and Ocean Sun to deploy floating solar technology in Australia, addressing land and water scarcity while advancing renewable energy solutions. The Isla Huar project underscores Alotta’s commitment to sustainable innovation in aquaculture, supporting cleaner energy practices in Chile’s Los Lagos region.
