en.Wedoany.com Reported - FlatironDragados has signed an agreement with New Brunswick Power (NB Power) to deliver the first phase of the remediation project at the Mactaquac Generating Station in New Brunswick, Canada. The Mactaquac Remediation Partnership, led by the company and also including Aecon and Green Infrastructure Partners, is advancing the project under an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) model.

During the 12-month development phase, the partnership will work with NB Power to advance the design, planning, and cost estimation of the project's major components. Upon successful completion of this phase and receipt of the necessary permits, a construction contract is expected to be finalized. Construction is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2027, with completion anticipated in 2039.
The remediation work is part of NB Power's Mactaquac Life Extension Project, a long-term program aimed at extending the generating station's operational life to 2068. The work will address deterioration caused by alkali-aggregate reaction through civil, mechanical, electrical, and environmental upgrades, while maintaining the safe and reliable operation of the facility. Planned work includes structural repairs and reinforcement of the generating station, encompassing concrete repair, leakage control, powerhouse modernization, intake and discharge channel rehabilitation, as well as spillway and gate upgrades.
The project will also replace or repair critical equipment and systems, involving auxiliary mechanical and electrical systems, turbine and generator components, overhead cranes, service gates (stop logs), and other heavy mechanical equipment. On the environmental front, planned measures include upgrades to the fish passage system and other mitigation measures related to the dam.
The Mactaquac Generating Station, commissioned in 1968, provides approximately 30% of the renewable electricity required to be generated by law in New Brunswick and meets about 20% of the province's peak power demand. This collaborative delivery model is designed to enable the project team and NB Power to work together during the development phase to optimize project scope, manage risks, and improve schedule and cost certainty before construction begins.
