Wedoany.com Report-Jun 4, AMEA Power, a renewable energy company, has launched a 500MW wind power plant in Ras Ghareb, located in Egypt’s Red Sea Governorate, as reported by Reuters. This facility, the largest operational wind farm in Africa, is a joint venture with AMEA Power holding a 60% stake and Sumitomo owning 40%.
The wind farm will power 500,000 homes while reducing CO₂ emissions by 1.4 million tonnes per year.
The wind farm is projected to produce 2,500 gigawatt hours (GWh) of clean electricity annually, enough to supply power to 500,000 households and reduce CO₂ emissions by 1.4 million tonnes each year. During its construction, the project employed 800 workers at its peak, boosting local economies and demonstrating AMEA Power’s commitment to job creation and sustainable development.
Completed 2.5 months ahead of schedule, the wind farm showcases AMEA Power’s ability to efficiently deliver large-scale renewable energy projects. “The commissioning of the 500MW wind power plant in the Red Sea Governorate marks a significant milestone for AMEA Power and for Egypt. Bringing 1GW of clean energy online in such a short period is a tremendous achievement and a reflection of our deep commitment to delivering impactful renewable energy solutions. This is the future of power generation in Africa – clean, inclusive and transformational,” said AMEA Power chairman Hussain Al Nowais.
The project secured funding from a group of international financial institutions, including IFC, JBIC, Standard Chartered Bank, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking, and Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank. The commercial portion was insured by NEXI, with additional support from the Commercial International Bank of Egypt.
This wind farm follows AMEA Power’s recent commissioning of a 500MW solar photovoltaic plant in Aswan, bringing the company’s total renewable energy capacity in Egypt to 1GW within six months. In January 2025, AMEA Power also expanded its portfolio by securing two battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in South Africa. The Gainfar and Boitekong projects, each exceeding 300MW in capacity, will provide essential power to the national grid, further strengthening the company’s presence in renewable energy.
