Wedoany.com Report-Jun 7, The Grain Union of Kazakhstan has released data on barley exports for the first eight months (September–April) of the 2024/25 marketing year, highlighting key trends in Kazakhstan’s grain market. In April 2025, barley exports reached 173.5 thousand tons, a decline from March’s 214.8 thousand tons, reflecting seasonal factors and limited remaining export capacity.
Yevgeny Karabanov, head of the Grain Union Analytics Committee, commented: “The decrease is seasonal in nature and also signals the exhaustion of export potential in the current marketing year.” He noted that exports to Iran remain robust, reaching record levels over the past four marketing years, driven by strong demand. In contrast, exports to China have lagged behind last season’s pace due to internal restrictions and Iran’s active purchasing within Kazakhstan.
The high demand from Iran and China has driven domestic barley prices to their highest since January 2023, ranging between 87,000 and 91,000 tenge per ton. Meanwhile, barley imports, primarily from Russia, have dropped to their lowest in four marketing years, underscoring Kazakhstan’s reliance on domestic production and export markets.
Karabanov further stated: “Considering the high demand and prices on the domestic market, we are increasing the previous forecast for barley exports from Kazakhstan in MY 2024/25 by 110 thousand tons – to 1.96 million tons.” This revised forecast reflects optimism about Kazakhstan’s ability to capitalize on global demand despite logistical and market challenges.
Kazakhstan’s barley sector continues to play a significant role in the country’s agricultural economy, with exports primarily targeting Central Asian markets and beyond. The Grain Union’s data underscores the importance of balancing domestic supply with export commitments to maintain price stability and meet international demand. The focus on key markets like Iran and China highlights Kazakhstan’s strategic position in the global grain trade, supported by its high-quality barley production.
