en.Wedoany.com Reported - The United States' new 50% tariffs on certain Canadian imports will exempt potash, sulfur, sulfuric acid, and other fertilizer products, in order to avoid collateral damage to the North American agricultural supply chain from the renewed escalation of trade tensions between the two countries. The tariffs, covering nearly $20 billion in imports, are set to take effect at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Time on August 19, and apply to dairy products, alcoholic beverages, vehicles, and consumer goods.

U.S. President Donald Trump issued three proclamations on July 20 to implement the duties under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930. This rarely invoked provision allows for additional tariffs of up to 50% on countries found to discriminate against U.S. commerce. The duties will apply to eligible goods even if they enjoy preferential treatment under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA); exemptions cover energy products, potash, fish, critical minerals, and products already subject to Section 232 tariffs.

The potash exemption is particularly critical for American farmers. Canada accounts for approximately 90% of U.S. net potash imports, and cross-border trade is a core component of North American fertilizer supply. Excluding Canadian fertilizer from the tariffs avoids placing additional cost burdens on growers on top of nutrient market volatility and disruptions to international fertilizer and raw material shipments.

The tariff action follows the U.S. decision on July 1 not to renew the USMCA in its current form. The agreement will now undergo annual reviews, with the three countries simultaneously negotiating possible modifications. Fertilizer industry groups had previously urged for exemptions, as domestic supply chains remain under pressure from Strait of Hormuz disruptions and rising input costs. Canadian potash producers Nutrien and K+S are major suppliers to the U.S. Midwest region.
