en.Wedoany.com Reported - Electricity generation at nuclear power plants operated by Rosatom has exceeded the plan by 7.8% since the beginning of this year, reaching 129.6 billion kWh. Alexey Likhachev, the company's CEO, told the industry publication Strana Rosatom that all plants are operating at 100% rated capacity, and that even under extreme climatic conditions, the engineering solutions employed ensure safe cooling.

Russian nuclear power plants operate stably under abnormally high temperatures

When designing nuclear power plants, Rosatom takes into account site-specific characteristics, including air temperature, hydrology, wind conditions, water supply, and seismic activity. Heat dissipation employs multiple systems, including once-through and recirculating cooling systems, with specific facilities such as natural-draft cooling towers, fan-assisted cooling towers, and spray ponds. In modern units, automated systems monitor critical parameters in real time, helping to optimize equipment operating modes.

The Rostov Nuclear Power Plant is an example of operation under high temperatures. When air temperatures exceed 40°C and soil temperatures rise to 60°C, the process water temperature at Units 3 and 4 exceeds optimal values. A fan-assisted cooling tower complex commissioned in 2021 resolved this issue. The facility enhances heat exchange during peak periods, maintaining stable electricity generation. A similar facility is also being built for Unit 4, with commissioning scheduled for 2027.

Rosatom's projects span a wide range of climate zones, from the Arctic to deserts, including the El-Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant in Egypt, implemented in a temperate and arid region. Each project is adapted to local conditions from the initial stage, and water scarcity and drought do not become insurmountable obstacles to plant operation.
