Michigan State University Extension Analyzes Used Farm Equipment Investment

Rising input costs and falling crop prices have made people more cautious in assessing actual farm needs and market supply.

LaPorte said that the availability of parts for used equipment, technological lifespan, and ongoing maintenance costs are equally critical to the final purchasing decision. He explained that these factors can become the "X" factor, leading farmers to feel that operating costs are too high and that this year may not be the right time to acquire equipment.

In LaPorte's view, social media is an effective channel for gathering operator feedback. Farmers are willing to communicate and share information, especially regarding used farm machinery; once someone expresses interest in a particular model, they often receive a wealth of responses.
