First Batch of Over 300 Chinese Agricultural Machines Arrives in Liberia, to Be Deployed to 13 Mechanization Service Centers

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 18, the Liberian Ministry of Agriculture confirmed that the first batch of more than 300 pieces of agricultural machinery and supporting equipment provided by China has arrived at the Freeport of Monrovia, marking the project's transition from the equipment procurement and transportation phase to the local deployment phase. The first batch of equipment to arrive includes 24 tractor heads, 8 semi-trailers, 8 trucks, and 8 towing vehicles. The second and final batch of equipment, loaded in 42 containers, is scheduled to arrive around September 26.

The overall batch of equipment includes tractors, walking tractors, rotary tillers, rice transplanters, small combine harvesters, front loaders, tractor trailers, and other supporting agricultural machinery. The equipment will be allocated to 13 agricultural mechanization service centers across six counties: Nimba, Montserrado, Bomi, Margibi, Bong, and Lofa, for agricultural operations such as land preparation, sowing, harvesting, and post-harvest handling.

In August this year, the Liberian Ministry of Agriculture disclosed that the government is adjusting its agricultural machinery deployment model, moving away from primarily distributing equipment directly to individuals or communities in favor of centralized operations through mechanization service centers. Farmers can use tractors and other mechanization services according to their operational needs, with equipment maintenance and operations managed uniformly by the centers. The government has currently established 13 agricultural mechanization service centers across six counties.

The Ministry of Agriculture had previously issued private operator selection documents for 8 of these mechanization centers, covering five counties: Lofa, Nimba, Bong, Margibi, and Montserrado. Official documents show that these centers will be equipped with tractors and their supporting implements, walking tractors, rotary tillers, rice transplanters, harvesters, water pumps, and irrigation equipment to provide mechanization services to smallholder farmers and commercial farms.

Under the current arrangement, Chinese technicians are scheduled to arrive in Liberia in October to conduct approximately 40 days of hands-on training for local agricultural machinery operators and maintenance technicians, with the training venue set at the Central Agricultural Research Institute in Suakoko, Bong County. After the first batch of equipment and the subsequent 42 containers have all arrived at the port, they will continue to be allocated to the 13 mechanization service centers.
