Panama Canal to Gradually Reduce Neopanamax Vessel Draft to 47.5 Feet Starting August 26

Effective August 26, the draft limit will be adjusted to 48 feet (14.63 meters); effective September 3, it will be further reduced to 47.5 feet (14.48 meters), and this measure will remain in place until further notice.

This adjustment applies to the Neopanamax locks and uses the tropical freshwater draft standard. Draft is the vertical depth of a vessel's hull below the waterline. With the reduced limits, vessels whose laden draft exceeds the maximum will need to adjust their cargo loads or transit arrangements to meet lock passage requirements.

This will mark the fourth and fifth draft adjustments announced by the Panama Canal Authority in 2026. The Authority released its first round of arrangements on June 4, setting the maximum allowable draft at 49.5 feet (15.09 meters) effective July 3; on July 1, it further announced a reduction to 49 feet (14.94 meters) effective July 24, and to 48.5 feet (14.78 meters) effective August 15. Under the latest schedule, the draft limit for Neopanamax vessels will be gradually reduced from 49.5 feet to 47.5 feet within two months.

The Panama Canal Authority attributes this round of adjustments to current water levels in Gatun Lake, hydrological forecasts for the coming weeks, and the ongoing effects of the El Niño phenomenon. Although Panama has entered the rainy season, water resource conditions in the canal watershed still require additional water-saving measures. These water management measures have been in effect since December 2025 to address navigation water demand during the 2026 dry season.

The Canal Authority stated that this round of draft adjustments will not reduce the existing transit slots for the Neopanamax locks and Panamax locks. In June 2026, the Panama Canal completed a total of 975 ocean-going vessel transits, averaging 32.5 per day; of these, Neopanamax vessels accounted for 295 transits, averaging 9.83 per day. The normal transit capacity of the Neopanamax locks is approximately 9 to 11 vessels per day, while the canal's overall sustainable transit capacity is approximately 36 to 38 vessels per day.

The Canal Authority will continue to monitor watershed inflow, Gatun Lake water levels, and weather conditions, and will decide whether to implement further navigation and water management measures based on the latest hydrological conditions.
