India’s First Variable Speed Pumped Storage Plant Commences Operations

Wedoany.com Report-Jun 6, THDC India Limited (THDCIL) has initiated the commercial operation date (COD) process for the first 250 megawatts (MW) of its 1,000 MW Variable Speed Pumped Storage Plant (PSP) in Tehri, Uttarakhand, marking India’s first such facility. This milestone, announced by the Ministry of Power, represents a significant advancement in the country’s renewable energy infrastructure.

The project, located in Tehri, Uttarakhand, aims to enhance grid reliability and facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources. The variable speed technology employed allows for precise management of power flow, enabling a more adaptable and efficient energy system. Once fully operational, the PSP will increase the Tehri Hydro Power Complex’s total capacity to 2,400 MW, establishing it as India’s largest hydropower complex.

Manohar Lal, Union Minister of Power, Housing and Urban Affairs, stated: “The project will significantly strengthen our grid stability and support the integration of renewable energy.” He further noted: “Variable speed technology allows us to manage power flow with precision, making our energy ecosystem smarter and more flexible.”

R.K. Vishnoi, Chairman and Managing Director of THDCIL, said: “Once fully operational, the project will elevate the Tehri Hydro Power Complex’s capacity to 2,400 MW, making it India’s largest Hydropower Complex.”

This initiative underscores THDCIL’s commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions in India. By leveraging innovative technology, the Tehri PSP will play a key role in stabilizing the grid and supporting the nation’s transition to cleaner energy sources, contributing to a more resilient and eco-friendly energy future.
