Australian BW ESS Acquires 250MW/1GWh Yanco Energy Storage Project

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On August 13, BW ESS, a global energy storage project investment and operation company, announced the acquisition of the Yanco battery energy storage project from Australian renewable energy developer ACEnergy. The project has completed financial close and entered the ready-to-build stage, with BW ESS responsible for subsequent construction and long-term operation. The transaction amount has not been disclosed.

The Yanco energy storage project is located in the Riverina region of New South Wales, Australia, near the town of Yanco in Leeton Shire, with a construction scale of 250 MW/1000 MWh and a continuous discharge duration of 4 hours. The project will connect to the existing Yanco 132 kV substation and participate in peak-valley arbitrage, renewable energy peak shaving, and power system security services in the Australian National Electricity Market.

The project was previously approved with a maximum capacity of 250 MW/1100 MWh; BW ESS's acquisition and planned implementation configuration is 250 MW/1000 MWh. The project site covers approximately 10 hectares, with the main site located about 1 kilometer southwest of Yanco town. The New South Wales Independent Planning Commission approved the project in October 2025, and in May 2026 approved partial adjustments to the road, site layout, and underground transmission cable routes.

ACEnergy has completed land acquisition, planning approvals, grid connection, and the signing of major project contracts, bringing the project to a construction-ready status. According to the plan released by BW ESS, on-site construction of the Yanco energy storage project will commence within 2026, with a target of commercial operation in 2028. Once completed, the project can provide continuous power supply for 4 hours to approximately 430,000 households.

CATL has been designated as the project's energy storage system integrator, responsible for the design, supply, testing, commissioning, and system integration of the energy storage system, medium-voltage power station, inverters, plant controllers, energy management system, and supervisory control and data acquisition system. ACLE Services serves as the project's balance-of-plant contractor, responsible for civil works, installation, and on-site construction, and will jointly provide long-term operation and maintenance services with CATL.

Project revenue is supported by long-term cash flow through a capacity swap agreement. BW ESS will also continue to fulfill the AUD 3 million Voluntary Planning Agreement previously signed by ACEnergy with Leeton Shire Council, and will promote local employment and procurement during the construction phase. According to the planning approval documents, the construction period is expected to create approximately 70 jobs, with about 5 long-term positions during the operation phase.
