en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Malta Regulator for Energy and Water Services (REWS) is preparing this year's second competitive tender (ITB) for renewable energy projects.

This tender round is open to installations with a capacity between 40 kW and 10 MW. Tender documents will be published on Monday (August 24), with the bidding window running from October 5 to October 12.

The ITB is Malta's competitive allocation mechanism for providing long-term financial support to renewable energy projects above 40 kW, with successful bidders receiving 20-year contracts for difference, and developers required to bid the electricity price they are willing to accept. According to information released by the government in April 2026, the total project quota for the two ITB rounds that year may be 15 MW, with a bid price cap of EUR 0.14 (USD 0.16) per kWh.

The first ITB round of 2026 was open to projects between 40 kW and 200 kW, with a bidding period from May 29 to June 5. REWS data shows that three bids were received in this round, of which two projects with capacities of 90 kW and 118 kW respectively were recommended for award, both at a winning price of EUR 0.136 per kWh.

Malta also operates a feed-in tariff scheme for smaller renewable energy systems. Since 2021, the scheme has only covered installations below 40 kW, with the current tariff set at EUR 0.15 per kWh.

According to data from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Malta's cumulative solar PV capacity stood at 250 MW by the end of last year, an increase of 12 MW compared to the previous year.
