GE Vernova Selected as Supplier for 260 MW Energy Storage Project in Stage Three of Australia's Supernode
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On August 21, GE Vernova (NYSE: GEV) announced in Brisbane, Australia, that it has been selected as the supplier for Stage 3 of the Supernode Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in Queensland. With this contract, GE Vernova will provide power conversion, control, and integration technology for Stages 1 through 3 of Australia's largest battery energy storage development.
The Supernode project is located at a critical node in Queensland's power grid. The batteries act as a buffer for the power system, storing electricity when supply is abundant and feeding it back to the grid when demand rises or renewable energy output fluctuates, thereby maintaining reliable power supply while creating conditions for more renewable energy to connect to the grid.
The Stage 1 and Stage 2 facilities are both fully operational, utilizing GE Vernova technology, and are among the largest operational battery energy storage facilities in Australia's National Electricity Market. Stage 3 will add 260 MW and 1,216 MWh of four-hour storage, bringing the total capacity of the Supernode project at a single site to 780 MW and 3,075 MWh. GE Vernova will provide the power conversion system, plant controls, system integration, and grid connection support for Stage 3.
Stage 3 has now received Generator Performance Standards (GPS) acceptance, a key milestone in the project's grid connection process. This acceptance establishes the agreed technical performance standards for the project's connection to Australia's National Electricity Market.
Ed Torres, Leader of Power Conversion and Energy Storage at GE Vernova's Electrification business, stated that battery energy storage is becoming a foundational component of modern power system operations. He noted that Supernode demonstrates how storage, power conversion, and intelligent controls can work together at scale, and that the engineering and integration work helped the project pass GPS acceptance—a grid connection milestone that proves the company's technical strength and its ability to support complex projects in Australia's stringent grid connection environment. The company is proud to expand its collaboration with Quinbrook, with grid-forming technology set to be introduced to Australia as a result.
James Allan, Senior Director at Quinbrook, stated that Supernode was never positioned as just a battery energy storage project from the outset. Located at the heart of Queensland's transmission network, the site's unique position makes it an ideal choice to support the long-term transformation of the state's power system. The site also has the potential for further expansion of 520 MW, which could be used in the future for battery storage, data centers, or a combination of both. Opportunities to develop infrastructure of this scale at strategically connected locations are extremely rare.
Grid-forming technology expands the role of batteries by enabling them to actively support system stability, providing some of the functions historically delivered by traditional power plants, including frequency support and system strength.
