Wedoany.com Report-Jun 13, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto announced that Indonesia aims to halt corn imports by 2026 to achieve self-sufficiency in corn production. He shared this goal during a simultaneous corn harvest and the launch of Indonesia’s first corn exports to Malaysia, held in West Kalimantan, as reported by Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman.
In 2024, Indonesia imported approximately 500,000 tons of corn. However, from January to July 2025, dry corn production reached an estimated 9.45 million tons, a rise of 0.94 million tons, or 11.08%, compared to the same period in the previous year. President Prabowo highlighted a 48% increase in national corn output in the first quarter of 2025, with yields improving from 4 tons per hectare to 6–8 tons per hectare.
The National Police of Indonesia is contributing to a large-scale initiative, the One Million Hectare Corn Planting Programme, to enhance corn production. President Prabowo expressed optimism about achieving self-sufficiency within a year, supported by high-quality seeds and organic fertilizers.
President Prabowo: “Indonesia may achieve corn self-sufficiency sooner than expected, potentially within one year.” He emphasized the role of innovation in processing agricultural products, promoting corn-based items like corn chips and corn rice, which he noted are healthier and offer higher value.
The President also stressed the importance of improving farmers’ welfare alongside production growth. He advocated for providing farmers with machinery, technology, seeds, fertilizers, and bio-fertilizers to support sustainable agricultural development. This initiative aims to strengthen the agricultural sector, boost local economies, and enhance food security through increased domestic production and new export opportunities.
