U.S. Superior Ag Launches 32,000-Ton Fertilizer River Terminal

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On August 25, agricultural cooperative Superior Ag officially inaugurated an Ohio River fertilizer terminal in Rockport, Indiana. The project represents an investment of over $20 million and features 32,000 tons of dry bulk fertilizer storage and distribution facilities, capable of receiving fertilizer via inland barges, with storage, blending, truck loading, and end-user sales capabilities.

The terminal occupies 18 acres at the former Summit River Terminal site. Superior Ag completed the site acquisition in January 2025 and commenced construction in July of the same year. The facility houses 10 large storage silos, each capable of storing different fertilizer types and formulations; the barge unloading system has a processing capacity of 600 tons per hour, allowing a fully loaded barge to be discharged in approximately 3 hours. Truck unloading, fertilizer blending, and dispatch systems each have a processing capacity of 300 tons per hour, with a 25-ton truck able to be loaded in about 5 minutes.

The terminal is equipped with overhead weighing hoppers, as well as automated systems for stabilizer and micronutrient addition and dust control, supporting direct barge-to-truck transfer, on-site storage, custom fertilizer blending, and overland distribution. It is expected to handle 30 to 35 fertilizer barges annually. Products from suppliers in the New Orleans area can reach the project site via the Mississippi River–Ohio River waterway corridor before being routed into the regional agricultural distribution network.

Superior Ag currently operates 13 agronomy service locations, 6 grain elevators, 1 feed mill, and 2 retail fuel stations, serving more than 2,700 cooperative members. The new terminal will expand fertilizer storage and distribution capacity across southwestern Indiana, northern and central Kentucky, and adjacent areas of Illinois, alleviating highway transportation and supply pressures during peak application periods such as spring planting and fall fertilization.
