UK Low Carbon Company Plans 86 MW Wind Farm in Scotland

en.Wedoany.com Reported - Low Carbon, a UK renewable energy developer, plans to develop the Forsinain Forest wind project in the Scottish Highlands, with a planned installed capacity of up to 86 megawatts. Once completed, it is expected to generate approximately 318,000 megawatt-hours of clean electricity annually.

The proposed site is located 3 kilometers north of Forsinard and 16 kilometers south of Melvich, primarily situated within non-native commercial forestry land, entirely outside the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Flow Country.

If approved, the project will install up to 12 turbines, along with new and upgraded access roads, a substation, and on-site construction facilities.

The wind farm is expected to generate enough electricity annually to meet the demand of over 98,000 UK households, while avoiding more than 135,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

The project incorporates a large-scale woodland-to-bog restoration plan within the site to restore peatland habitats, supporting long-term carbon sequestration alongside renewable energy generation.

In addition to power generation, the project will bring economic benefits to the local area. If approved and operational, the developer plans to establish a community benefit fund, calculated at £5,000 per megawatt, amounting to approximately £432,000 per year; it is also expected to pay approximately £1 million in business rates to the Highland Council annually.

Andy Sloan, Development Director at Low Carbon, stated that Forsinain Forest is a key part of the company's growing onshore wind project pipeline in Scotland; if approved, it will support Scotland's climate goals, accelerate the UK's transition to clean energy, and enhance energy security by reducing reliance on fossil fuels. He also noted that combining clean energy generation with nature restoration and long-term community benefits has the potential to deliver lasting economic value to the local community.
