Bull Secures €387.8 Million LUMI-AI Supercomputer Contract
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On August 31, the European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) and Bull officially signed the procurement contract for the LUMI-AI supercomputer. As the winning supplier, Bull will be responsible for the system's procurement, delivery, installation, and maintenance. LUMI-AI will be deployed at the CSC – IT Center for Science data center in Kajaani, Finland, serving as the next-generation core computing system of the LUMI AI Factory, with deployment and user access scheduled for the second half of 2027.

The total project budget is €387.8 million, covering the procurement, delivery, installation, and subsequent maintenance of the supercomputer. Of this amount, 50% will be funded by EuroHPC JU through the European Union's Digital Europe Programme, and the remaining 50% will be provided by the LUMI AI Factory consortium. The consortium is led by Finland and includes the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Norway, and Poland. Bull was selected following a public tender process launched in May 2025, while Finland was designated as the system hosting location in December 2024.
LUMI-AI will feature AMD Instinct MI430X GPUs and sixth-generation AMD EPYC processors with 256 cores. According to the project's projections, the new system's AI computing capability will be approximately 10 times that of the existing LUMI supercomputer, while its high-performance computing capability will be nearly double that of the current system, enabling it to handle large-scale AI training and inference, scientific simulation, and data-intensive computing tasks.
The system's storage component will adopt the IBM Storage Scale high-performance storage solution; the data center network will be built with Nokia's participation, combined with Bull's BXI high-speed interconnect technology to connect computing, storage, and network resources. LUMI-AI will also be integrated with the LUMI-IQ quantum computing system, planned for deployment in the same computing environment, providing a combined computing infrastructure for classical high-performance computing, AI, and quantum computing tasks.
LUMI-AI is planned to operate on 100% renewable energy and utilize waste heat generated by the data center. Once the system becomes operational, its computing resources will primarily serve European startups, small and medium-sized enterprises, research institutions, and industrial users, with resource allocation jointly managed by EuroHPC JU and the LUMI AI Factory consortium in proportion to their respective investments.
