Dubai's RTA Awards $316 Million Contract for Al Medan Street Development Project

en.Wedoany.com Reported - Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has awarded two contracts totaling approximately $316 million for the construction of two packages of the Al Medan Street Development Project.

The first package was awarded to Abu Dhabi-based contractor Western Bainoona Group.

The scope of works for this package includes: upgrading the section of Al Medan Street from the intersection with Latifa bint Hamdan Street to Umm Suqeim Street, and extending Al Marabea Street from Dubai Hills community to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road. The works also include constructing a new grade-separated interchange at the junction of Al Marabea Street and Al Medan Street, with four lanes in each direction, and building bridges totaling 1,600 meters in length, increasing capacity to 14,400 vehicles per hour. This phase also includes constructing a direct connection between Al Marabea Street and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, as well as a 700-meter-long elevated link on Dubai-Al Ain Road leading to Nad Al Hamar Street.

Indian contractor Larsen & Toubro (L&T) won the other package, which covers the upgrade from First Al Khail Street via Al Khail Road to Muscat Street. This package includes constructing approximately 2 kilometers of surface roads to connect Al Medan Street with Latifa bint Hamdan Street. The works also include intersection improvements and the conversion of the Al Medan Street-Muscat Street intersection into a multi-level grade-separated interchange, designed with the same capacity of 14,400 vehicles per hour. The works also include cycling tracks and underpasses to maintain network continuity and encourage sustainable mobility.

The Al Medan Street Development Project is expected to be completed by the end of 2028, including the construction of 3.7 kilometers of bridges, 17 kilometers of new roads, and dedicated cycling tracks that will connect to Dubai's existing cycling network. The scheme also includes multiple intersection upgrades, designed to increase the capacity of the north-south corridor by 18%.

The RTA stated that upon project completion, travel time from Al Manama Street and Dubai-Al Ain Road to Umm Suqeim Street will be reduced from 30 minutes to 10 minutes, a decrease of 66%. The project is expected to serve surrounding residential areas and developments, covering a total population of more than 500,000.
