Realta Fusion Partners with MGE to Evaluate 200 MW Fusion Power Plant

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 2, fusion energy company Realta Fusion established a strategic partnership with utility company Madison Gas and Electric (MGE) and its parent company MGE Energy to evaluate the joint development of a 200-megawatt electric (MWe) fusion power plant in Wisconsin, USA. The first phase of the partnership already includes capital investment, with MGE Energy making a direct equity investment in Realta Fusion, though the specific amount has not been disclosed.

Under the partnership arrangement, in addition to participating in research on the future plant's development, MGE will provide Realta Fusion with equipment, engineering, and technical support, as well as participate in site selection, permitting, grid interconnection, and financing for the potential plant. The project is currently still in the joint development assessment phase, with no specific site yet determined, and neither party has disclosed the plant's investment amount or final ownership structure. Realta Fusion CEO Kieran Furlong stated that the mid-2030s represents a reasonable target timeframe for the Wisconsin fusion plant, with plans to advance commercialization of its fusion technology in the early 2030s.

The planned plant will have a capacity of at least 200 MWe. Realta Fusion stated that a 200 MWe plant would supply power equivalent to approximately 150,000 households. If the project proceeds, site selection, permitting, and grid interconnection work will proceed in parallel with the development of the fusion device technology, rather than waiting until the commercial technology is completed. MGE currently serves approximately 170,000 electric customers in southern Wisconsin, and there is potential for other utility companies to join the future project.

This partnership also forms a sequential development relationship with Realta Forge, the research and development facility Realta Fusion is building in Madison, though the two are not the same project. Realta Forge is located at OM Station, the former Oscar Mayer plant site. MGE confirmed that Realta plans to lease approximately 250,000 square feet of office and industrial space for the fusion R&D facility. This site will host the next phase of fusion device development and prototype validation, while the planned 200 MWe commercial plant will be sited separately.

Realta Fusion plans to build a next-generation magnetic mirror fusion prototype device named Hammir at Realta Forge. The company has previously confirmed that construction of the R&D facility will begin by the end of 2026, with the first phase of the project covering approximately 200,000 to 250,000 square feet. The State of Wisconsin and the City of Madison have provided up to approximately $55 million in support for Realta Forge, including approximately $37.5 million in state sales and use tax exemptions, up to $15 million in performance-based enterprise zone tax credits, and $2.8 million in tax incremental financing.

Realta Fusion pursues an axisymmetric magnetic mirror fusion approach supported by high-temperature superconducting magnets, with its technology originating from the WHAM experimental project at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. The U.S. Department of Energy has included Realta Fusion on its list of eight companies in the "Milestone-Based Fusion Development Program"; the Department previously confirmed that Realta has completed the technical milestones related to full-device modeling of simple mirror equilibrium, supporting subsequent R&D toward achieving higher scientific energy gain on its tandem mirror fusion pathway.

This agreement with MGE brings a utility company directly into the early-stage development of Realta Fusion's commercial plant. At this stage, MGE Energy has already completed its direct equity investment in Realta Fusion, while MGE has moved into equipment, engineering, site selection, permitting, grid interconnection, and financing preparation; the 200 MWe plant itself has not yet entered the construction phase.
