UAE's renewable energy capacity exceeds 8.2 GW in 2025, growing over 63-fold in a decade

en.Wedoany.com Reported - Sharif Al Olama, Undersecretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs at the UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, stated that over the past decade, the country's renewable energy capacity has grown from 129 MW in 2015 to over 8.2 GW in 2025, an increase of more than 63 times.

In 2025, clean energy accounted for 32.4% of the UAE's total electricity generation, with annual clean energy output exceeding 62,400 GWh; the country has set a target to raise this share to 35% by 2031. During the same period, total installed clean energy capacity reached 13,805 MW, encompassing nuclear power, photovoltaics, concentrated solar power, wind power, and waste-to-energy. In 2025, the UAE's total electricity generation stood at 192,735 GWh, while total electricity consumption across society reached 174,524 GWh.

Al Olama noted that these figures demonstrate the UAE's continued progress in diversifying its energy mix and enhancing the readiness of the national grid. Collaboration between federal and local entities, national energy companies, and the private sector has driven the diversification of the energy mix, efficiency improvements, and the development of infrastructure supporting the energy transition.

Commenting on international rankings, Al Olama highlighted that in 2025, the UAE ranked third globally in several indicators related to electricity access, quality, and reliability, and second globally in indicators covering energy transition, per capita solar consumption, and green energy transition.

Regarding electricity market development and interconnection, the UAE Cabinet has approved two agreements related to the Arab Common Electricity Market and signed a memorandum of understanding with India on an electricity interconnection project between the two countries. As part of the Electricity Market Development Project, the Resource Adequacy Study has been completed to support the reliability and sustainability of electricity supply.

At the grid technology and infrastructure level, the UAE's Emirates Monitoring Center has reached 100% completion. As part of the second phase of the center's work, the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, together with Siemens, developed and implemented the Renewable Energy Management Program study to strengthen grid monitoring and coordination of the national power system. Additionally, the country is advancing battery recycling for electric and hybrid vehicles, the Green Industrial Transformation Project, as well as research and pilot programs focused on clean energy, resource efficiency, and electric mobility.

Al Olama stated that the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure will continue working with partners to enhance the efficiency and readiness of the national energy system, supporting energy security, economic growth, and the UAE's goals for clean energy development and climate neutrality.
