Siemens Energy Commissions SGT-800 Industrial Demonstrator Turbine in Germany
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 3, Siemens Energy completed the installation and commissioning of an SGT-800 Industrial Demonstrator Turbine at the Marl Chemical Park in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The unit is deployed in a gas-fired power plant operated by SYNEQT and is planned to undergo a 4-year industrial operation testing program, supplying electricity and process steam to chemical companies in the park on an ongoing basis while conducting long-term validation of new turbine components, materials, and manufacturing processes.

SYNEQT, a wholly owned subsidiary of Evonik Industries, is responsible for the infrastructure and energy services of the Marl Chemical Park. The power plant was originally equipped with 4 SGT-800 gas turbines. One of the operating units has now been replaced by the industrial demonstrator turbine owned by Siemens Energy, with the original gas turbine retained on site as backup equipment. During the testing period, the demonstrator turbine will be subject to continuous operational monitoring, and certain test components will be periodically replaced in accordance with the validation plan.
The scope of this validation includes turbine blades, guide vanes, and combustors, as well as gas turbine components manufactured using additive manufacturing, new materials, and coatings. These components have previously undergone engineering design, test bench, and component-level validation. This round of testing will further accumulate thousands of hours of operational data under actual load conditions in a commercial power plant, with planned inspections and replacements to assess the condition of components during long-term operation.
The Marl Chemical Park already has an established operating foundation for SGT-800 units. Siemens Energy received an order for a combined cycle power plant project at the park in 2020, in which the Marl VII unit is configured with 1 SGT-800 gas turbine, 1 SST-400 steam turbine, and two generators, with a designed electrical output of 90 MW and thermal output of 220 MW. Following the commissioning of the Marl VI and Marl VII cogeneration facilities, their combined power generation capacity reaches up to approximately 270 MW, with the capability to produce up to 660 tons of process steam per hour.
Siemens Energy's current SGT-800 product range covers a power output of approximately 45–62 MW, with around 620 units installed globally and more than 20 million operating hours accumulated. The 4-year testing program for the Marl demonstrator turbine will focus on generating long-term operational data for new components in a commercial operating environment, to be used for subsequent technical qualification validation of gas turbine components.
