Google Signs 22-Year Power Purchase Agreement with Finland's Loviisa Nuclear Power Plant

The investment includes building and expanding data centers in Finland, along with supporting energy projects. Among these, Google signed a 22-year power purchase agreement with Finnish energy company Fortum to purchase up to 50% of the electricity generated by the Loviisa nuclear power plant.

Google President and Chief Investment Officer Ruth Porat stated that this arrangement is Google's first nuclear energy deal outside the United States. Google said the investment is its largest single investment in Europe, and the related infrastructure will support services including Gemini, Search, Maps, and YouTube.

The Loviisa nuclear power plant is located in southern Finland, near Google's data center in Hamina. The plant currently supplies approximately 10% of Finland's electricity. Fortum stated that the long-term power purchase agreement will provide economic certainty for lifetime extension and upgrade investments at the Loviisa plant, supporting its operation until 2050.

In addition to the power purchase agreement, Google and Fortum will also explore the development of new nuclear and renewable energy projects in Finland. The two parties also plan to study new business models to improve the commercial viability of potential new nuclear reactors at the Loviisa site.

Google stated that the Finland project is planned for implementation between 2027 and 2028, with the construction phase expected to contribute 3.6 billion euros annually to Finland's GDP; once operational, the project is expected to support approximately 7,000 jobs per year. Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo said the cooperation will promote innovation, research and development, and economic growth, and noted that existing information indicates Finland has sufficient electricity supply.
