Wedoany.com Report-Jun 23, Pacific H2, an Alaska-based energy company, has collaborated with Aleut, an Alaska Native regional corporation, to develop green ammonia production facilities on Adak Island. The project aims to produce approximately 200,000 tons of renewable ammonia annually for export, supporting sustainable economic growth in the region.

The production will occur aboard the P2XFloater, a floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) vessel developed by H2Carrier and approved by DNV. The vessel features on-deck PEM electrolyzers for hydrogen production and Haber-Bosch equipment for ammonia synthesis. This FPSO approach offers lower construction costs and flexibility to relocate based on demand or resource availability compared to land-based facilities.

The facility will be powered by wind energy, utilizing Adak Island’s strong wind resources, often referred to as the “Birthplace of the Winds.” Pacific H2 has leased 3,500 acres on the island to build onshore wind turbines and related infrastructure. Located near the Bering Sea and North Pacific Ocean, Adak’s strategic position as the United States’ westernmost ice-free deepwater port places it within a seven-day shipping radius of major Asian markets.

This summer, Pacific H2 will begin installing meteorological monitoring stations to collect wind data, aiding in the selection of suitable turbine models. Construction is expected to take three years, with ammonia production and exports projected to start in the early 2030s. The project is currently in the permitting and early development phases.

Skoey Vergen, President and CEO of Aleut, stated: “This is a meaningful opportunity for Adak, for Alaska, and for the renewable energy industry. Pacific H2’s project brings global innovation to a local setting. Most importantly, it opens the door for sustainable economic growth in Adak and creates long-term opportunities for the region.”

The initiative represents a significant investment in the Aleut region, fostering economic development while advancing clean energy solutions through renewable ammonia production for global markets.
