Rocket Lab Begins Mass Production of Germanium-Free Space Solar Cells with 31.5% Efficiency
en.Wedoany.com Reported - Rocket Lab Corporation announced the mass production release of its Inverted Metamorphic (IMM) Apex solar cell. The cell is a high-efficiency space power solution designed to eliminate reliance on germanium substrates and avoid critical mineral supply chain bottlenecks.

For nearly three decades, conventional multi-junction solar cells used in defense, commercial, and scientific space missions have relied on germanium as a substrate. Recent export controls and raw material consolidation surrounding critical minerals have driven up production costs and exposed satellite array manufacturers to supply disruption risks.
Rocket Lab stated that IMM Apex uses an inverted metamorphic architecture that completely eliminates germanium while achieving 31.5% beginning-of-life solar conversion efficiency. In addition to reducing critical material risk, the design also reduces cell mass by 40% compared to conventional triple-junction space solar products. The lower weight translates directly into a higher watt-per-kilogram ratio, enabling satellite manufacturers to reduce launch payload weight.
Rocket Lab designed the cell as a direct replacement for conventional germanium-based cells. This direct compatibility allows spacecraft integrators and constellation developers to adopt germanium-free chemistry without redesigning existing solar array configurations or making significant capital investments to retrofit assembly lines.
"IMM Apex delivers superior performance while addressing real-world challenges such as rising material costs and supply chain constraints," said Brad Clevenger, President of Space Systems at Rocket Lab USA. "With IMM Apex, customers get a high-efficiency, lightweight, germanium-free product that combines proven reliability with faster production times."
The IMM Apex platform is based on Rocket Lab's foundational inverted metamorphic technology, which previously powered NASA's Ingenuity Mars Helicopter during Mars flight operations and currently powers on-orbit satellite constellations.
Rocket Lab is scaling up production of IMM Apex at its space power manufacturing facility in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Targeted capital investment and manufacturing optimization at the facility are expected to support production of "hundreds of kilowatts" per year to meet the growing power demands of commercial mega-constellations, civil space exploration, and national security space programs.
