The Landing Gear Exchange Program has long provided customers with a practical alternative to purchasing and storing costly spare landing gear. This first 737 MAX exchange with American Airlines demonstrates that the program's proven model—overhauling, certifying, and delivering ready-to-install assemblies—is equally effective for Boeing's latest-generation single-aisle aircraft.

William Ampofo, senior vice president of Parts & Distribution and Supply Chain for Boeing Global Services, said this milestone confirms what customers have recognized for years: that Boeing's landing gear exchange capability delivers predictable, safe, and cost-effective results; extending the program to the 737 MAX gives operators another proven tool to reduce ground time, manage costs, and align heavy maintenance with operational needs.

For this completed 737 MAX exchange, Boeing provided a set of overhauled and certified landing gear assemblies and an installation kit, excluding wheels, tires, and brakes. The exchange process validated the end-to-end flow from technical overhaul and documentation to delivery, and demonstrated that the approach can be applied consistently across the MAX fleet.

Boeing is also expanding global overhaul capacity and coordinating with certified MRO partners to broaden geographic coverage and shorten lead times. Near-term priorities include expanding exchange inventory that can support the 737 MAX, adding forward-exchange slots near customer operating locations, and tracking operational metrics to quantify ground time and cost benefits as the program scales.

By supporting forward exchange of certified components, Boeing's solution helps airlines avoid lengthy in-place overhauls and the risk of prolonged grounding. Operators can shift from holding high-cost spare parts inventory to reserving forward-exchange slots, freeing up working capital and improving fleet predictability. Technical overhaul, incorporation of applicable service bulletins, certification, and supplier coordination are all handled by Boeing, transferring inventory and obsolescence risk away from the operator.
