Wedoany.com Report-Jun 28, NamPower, Namibia’s national power utility, has commenced construction on the Sores Gaib Power Station, a 100 MW solar project located 33 kilometers northwest of Rosh Pinah in southern Namibia. This development marks the utility’s largest solar initiative to date, advancing the country’s renewable energy goals.

The project, valued at NAD 1.6 billion (approximately $88.4 million), is financed through a loan secured from German development bank KfW in September 2024, supplemented by NamPower’s internal reserves. Scheduled for completion by June 2026, the solar plant is expected to significantly enhance Namibia’s energy capacity.

During its construction phase, the Sores Gaib Power Station will generate over 300 direct jobs, contributing to local economic growth. The project aligns with Namibia’s commitment to harnessing renewable energy sources to meet growing energy demands.

Kahenge Haulofu, Managing Director of NamPower, spoke at the groundbreaking ceremony, stating: “Our country has abundant sun and we as a nation are ready to seize the opportunities that renewable energy offers. The 100 MW Sores Gaib Power Station is a critical step in fulfilling that potential.”

According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Namibia’s total installed solar capacity stood at 163 MW by the end of 2024. The addition of the Sores Gaib Power Station will further strengthen the nation’s renewable energy infrastructure, supporting sustainable development and energy reliability.

The project underscores NamPower’s dedication to expanding clean energy solutions, leveraging Namibia’s abundant solar resources. By integrating advanced solar technology, the Sores Gaib Power Station will play a key role in meeting the country’s energy needs while fostering economic opportunities in the region.
