Changma Tunnel Photovoltaic Power Supplement Station in Gansu, China, Put into Operation, Expected to Generate Over 300,000 kWh Annually
en.Wedoany.com Reported - The Changma Tunnel Photovoltaic Power Supplement Station, under the Second General Contracting Department of the S20 Jiaruo Project of Gansu Road & Bridge Group, was recently officially completed and put into operation. This project is the first transportation-energy integration demonstration project in Gansu Province to achieve large-scale application of distributed photovoltaics in the construction of extra-long highway tunnels, providing a new practical pathway for the application of photovoltaic green electricity in highway traffic engineering construction.
Located in a Class I solar energy resource region in China, the Changma Tunnel is a key control project of the S20 Jiaruo Project, characterized by a long construction period, high electricity load, and high energy consumption intensity. The project utilizes the idle space at the top of the tunnel portal to deploy a 150kW distributed photovoltaic power generation system, adopting the technical route of "municipal power as the primary source, photovoltaics as a supplement, self-generation for self-use, and no surplus power fed into the grid." It is also equipped with an intelligent photovoltaic management system, establishing a dedicated green power supplement supply system for the tunnel and achieving coordinated matching between clean energy and tunnel construction electricity demand.

The technical approach of this project lies in the coordinated operation of the intelligent photovoltaic management system and photovoltaic power generation equipment to address the intermittency and volatility of photovoltaic power generation, verifying the technical feasibility and operational stability of the photovoltaic power supply system under the complex working conditions of an extra-long highway tunnel. In terms of application scenarios, the project combines distributed photovoltaics with the electricity demand of extra-long highway tunnel construction, transforming the traditional model of long-term reliance on external grid power for tunnel construction and providing a replicable demonstration for similar scenarios.
Measured data show that the power station operates stably, providing approximately 1,000 kWh of green electricity daily for the construction of the Changma Tunnel, with an expected average annual power generation of over 300,000 kWh.

As the next step, Gansu Road & Bridge Group will use this project as a pilot to conduct photovoltaic operation data monitoring and economic benefit analysis, develop standardized technical solutions, promote the application of distributed photovoltaics in more scenarios within the transportation construction sector, and explore new business models for the photovoltaic industry.
