UK Approves 450 MW Solar and 150 MW Energy Storage Project

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On October 9, the UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero approved the Steeple Renewable Energy Project developed by RES Group, granting a development consent order. The project is located in Nottinghamshire, England, and is planned to include approximately 450 MW of ground-mounted solar photovoltaic capacity and a 150 MW battery energy storage system, with a total maximum grid connection capacity of 600 MW. The project was submitted by Steeple Solar Farm Limited, a subsidiary of RES Group, and has completed the Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project approval process.

The project construction area is located on the east and west sides of the village of Sturton-le-Steeple in Nottinghamshire, south of West Burton Power Station. According to the submitted planning documents, the project approval land area is approximately 888.31 hectares, with a design operational life of 40 years. The construction content includes ground-mounted solar arrays, battery energy storage facilities, grid connection systems, as well as on-site roads, cables, and other ancillary facilities.

Steeple Solar Farm Limited submitted its development consent application to the UK Planning Inspectorate on May 14, 2025, and the application was accepted on June 11. The project then entered the public participation and independent examination process. The examining authority submitted its recommendation to the Secretary of State for Energy on July 10, 2026, and the government formally made the approval decision on October 9.

RES Group began advancing the project development in 2023. According to calculations published by the developer, once the solar facilities are operational, the expected annual electricity generation will be equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of approximately 180,000 UK households. During construction and operation, the project is expected to generate approximately £224 million in economic investment in the local area and support approximately 400 jobs. A community benefit program of approximately £13 million is planned over the project's full lifecycle, with specific implementation details still to be determined under subsequent arrangements.

Following the granting of development consent, the project will continue to advance detailed engineering design, implementation of consent conditions, and construction preparation work.
