Telxius and Nokia Deploy 800G Coherent Optical Modules Across Europe, the Americas, and Latin America

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 15, Telxius and Nokia announced that they will deploy ICE-X 800G ZR/ZR+ coherent pluggable optical modules across Telxius's terrestrial transmission networks in Europe, the United States, and Latin America to expand the capacity of its existing backbone network. This deployment adopts an IP-over-DWDM architecture, which can directly add high-speed wavelength capacity on existing IP and optical transmission infrastructure, while introducing Nokia's network automation system for unified monitoring, fault management, performance monitoring, and service provisioning of the optical network.
Telxius currently operates more than 100,000 kilometers of submarine cable and terrestrial backhaul networks, with approximately 100 PoPs and 26 submarine cable landing stations and data centers worldwide, covering major digital hubs across Europe, the Americas, and the transatlantic route. This round of 800G upgrades targets its terrestrial network rather than a single route capacity expansion, with deployment spanning multiple international transmission corridors across Europe, the United States, and Latin America.
Nokia's ICE-X supports 800G ZR and ZR+ coherent transmission. Telxius will use it for its IP-over-DWDM network, enabling routing equipment to connect directly to DWDM line systems through coherent pluggable modules. Compared with traditional architectures that add standalone forwarding equipment, this solution reduces the rack space and power consumption required for network expansion and integrates optical layer capacity expansion directly into IP network equipment. This deployment is also accompanied by Nokia's automation platform, providing end-to-end visibility, fault and performance monitoring, and coordinated service provisioning for the optical transport network.
This commercial deployment continues the two parties' previous technical validation on the BRUSA submarine cable. Nokia and Telxius previously used ICE-X 800G ZR+ coherent pluggable technology to achieve single-wavelength 400Gb/s transmission over a link exceeding 5,600 kilometers on the BRUSA submarine cable. This round of new nodes marks a shift from submarine cable testing to actual deployment on terrestrial backbone networks, expanding the application scope from ultra-long-haul submarine cable transmission validation to live network capacity upgrades across Europe and the Americas.
BRUSA is an important submarine cable system connecting the United States and Latin America for Telxius, with a total length of approximately 11,000 kilometers, connecting Virginia Beach in the United States, San Juan in Puerto Rico, and Fortaleza and Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, with a current design capacity of approximately 160Tbps. The system has been in operation since 2018 and connects with Telxius's terrestrial backhaul networks in the United States and Latin America.
Telxius had previously advanced its 400G terrestrial transmission network upgrades. In 2024, the company adopted Juniper's converged optical routing architecture to deploy 400G coherent pluggable optical modules across core and edge networks in Europe and the Americas, integrating IP and optical layers through IPoDWDM. With this round adopting Nokia's 800G technology, single-port transmission rates have further expanded from the previous 400G toward the 800G level.
