Canada provides CAD 66.44 million to support construction of 35 km water supply network in Tyendinaga

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 15, the Government of Canada announced plans to invest up to CAD 66,435,875 in the water supply network expansion project in Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory, Ontario. The funding comes through the Direct Delivery stream of the Build Communities Strong Fund, and the project will connect community areas currently without centralized water supply to the existing water treatment plant.

The project plans to construct approximately 35 km of water supply mains and distribution network, directly connecting 305 existing homes and providing water supply connection capacity for 792 future homes. The works will involve laying PVC and HDPE pipes of various specifications, along with the installation of fire hydrants, valves, and network flushing devices.

The existing 305 homes are not yet connected to the community centralized water supply system. The new network will directly utilize the supply capacity of the existing water treatment plant. Upon completion of the mains, branches, and residential connections, the centralized water supply coverage will extend to the remaining unserved areas of the community. The project also includes new fire hydrant connection facilities to improve local firefighting water supply coverage.

The project has completed the federal environmental review. The Department of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada initiated the project's environmental assessment process on May 25 and issued a decision on June 23 determining that the project is not expected to cause significant adverse environmental effects when appropriate measures are implemented, allowing federal departments to continue providing funding and advancing project implementation.

Some areas of Tyendinaga have long relied on private wells and trucked water. Groundwater contamination and water supply stability during drought periods are the direct engineering conditions driving this round of network expansion. Once the 35 km of new network is operational, the project will reduce the need for trucked water and provide centralized water supply infrastructure to support the lifting of the community's long-term drinking water advisory.

Project funding is arranged through the Direct Delivery stream of Canada's Build Communities Strong Fund. The fund was launched in fiscal year 2026–2027, with the Direct Delivery stream planning to allocate CAD 6 billion over 10 years. The federal funding ceiling for the Tyendinaga project is CAD 66,435,875, and the disbursement remains conditional upon the signing of a funding agreement between the federal government and the project recipient.

The project owner is the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte, and the federal responsible authority is the Department of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada. The project scope has been defined as 35 km of water network, connections for 305 existing homes, connection capacity for 792 future homes, and fire hydrants, valves, and flushing facilities. The project will proceed to the funding agreement and construction implementation stages.
