Planet Labs Germany Awarded Federal Satellite Services Contract Worth Up to €25 Million

The contract includes follow-on options, with a maximum potential contract value of €25 million over five years.

Under the contract arrangement, the Federal Agency for Cartography and Geodesy (BKG) will serve as the project coordinating agency, responsible for distributing high-resolution tasked satellite imagery, nationwide Planet Mosaics imagery, and related geospatial analysis products to German federal civilian government departments. This procurement corresponds to Planet's Constellation Services dedicated constellation service; the German government is acquiring dedicated satellite tasking and data service capabilities, not ownership of the relevant satellites.

Planet's dedicated constellation service allows customers to obtain dedicated satellite imaging capability within designated areas of interest, with the relevant satellite tasking not requiring competition with ordinary commercial users for scheduling resources. The service system can be further configured with local ground infrastructure, customer-owned encryption keys, and direct data reception capability; Planet also offers different levels of solutions ranging from dedicated access to existing on-orbit satellites to building an independent sovereign satellite constellation. This German contract discloses dedicated tasking and data platform services, and the specific number of satellites corresponding to this contract has not yet been announced.

The contract also includes a set of cloud-native software-as-a-service and platform solutions deployed on European cloud infrastructure, used for satellite tasking, imagery data, and geospatial analysis product management. The relevant data platform will operate on European infrastructure, providing German government departments with a centralized entry point for satellite data acquisition and processing.

Planet and the German federal government already had a foundation for satellite data cooperation. In 2022, Planet Labs Germany signed a contract with BKG to provide daily high-frequency satellite imagery to German federal agencies; at that time, more than 400 German federal agencies could already access Planet remote sensing data through BKG infrastructure for crisis response, environmental and nature protection, forest and agricultural monitoring, and other operations. This new contract further expands from shared commercial satellite data services to dedicated satellite tasking.

Planet is currently also expanding its European business infrastructure in Berlin. The company plans to move its European headquarters into a new space campus in the fall of 2026; the new facility will integrate satellite manufacturing, engineering research and development, mission operations, data processing, and artificial intelligence analysis functions, and will increase large-scale satellite manufacturing capacity in Germany.

The tender award for this contract has currently been completed, with a contract term of up to five years and a maximum potential value of €25 million.
