Técnicas Reunidas Awarded FEED Contract for South Africa's Million-Tonne Green Ammonia Project
en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 16, Hive Hydrogen South Africa (HHSA) awarded the front-end engineering design (FEED) contract for the Coega Green Ammonia Project in South Africa to Técnicas Reunidas. The project is located in the Coega Special Economic Zone in Nelson Mandela Bay, Eastern Cape Province, adjacent to the Port of Ngqura, with a planned green ammonia production capacity of over 1 million tonnes per year. Técnicas Reunidas will be responsible for the front-end engineering design of the green hydrogen and green ammonia production units and supporting facilities.
The FEED scope includes green hydrogen electrolyzers, an air separation unit, an ammonia synthesis system, a seawater desalination plant, ammonia storage facilities with a capacity of over 100,000 tonnes, a transfer pipeline connecting to the Port of Ngqura, and related utilities and auxiliary facilities. The project scheme previously announced by Hive includes up to 1,120 MW of electrolyzers, four liquid ammonia storage tanks with a single-tank capacity of 35,000 tonnes, and approximately 7 kilometers of cryogenic ammonia transfer pipeline.
The total investment scale of the Coega Green Ammonia Project is approximately USD 5.8 billion. The subsequent EPC scope for the green hydrogen and green ammonia production units undertaken by Técnicas Reunidas is valued at approximately USD 1.8 billion, excluding the independent renewable energy generation and upstream power infrastructure that will supply electricity to the project. Upon completion of FEED, if the project meets technical and commercial targets, obtains approvals and financing, and reaches a final investment decision, the existing FEED contract is planned to be converted into a full EPC contract.
The project's supporting renewable energy includes the Crossroads Green Energy photovoltaic cluster and two groups of wind power projects. The latest project information from Hive shows that the planned photovoltaic capacity is up to 1,430 MW, and the planned capacities of the two groups of wind power projects are 1,272 MW and 608 MW, respectively. The 1,430 MW photovoltaic project has completed permitting at the development stage and is planned to commence construction in the fourth quarter of 2026, with its power generation expected to meet approximately 40% of the Coega Green Ammonia Project's electricity demand.
The water required for project production will be supplied through seawater desalination facilities, and nitrogen will be extracted by the air separation system. Green hydrogen will enter the Haber-Bosch ammonia synthesis unit to be converted into green ammonia, which will then be transported through the cryogenic transfer pipeline to the Port of Ngqura deep-water port for export. The products are mainly targeted at the European and Far East markets, while domestic supply to the South African market will also be retained.
Hive previously set the target for commercial operation of the Coega project in the fourth quarter of 2029. The project entity is jointly promoted by Hive Energy and BuiltAfrica, with Hive Energy holding a 75% stake and BuiltAfrica holding a 25% stake. The Coega project has been included in South Africa's National Strategic Integrated Projects system.
This FEED contract will further define the process configuration, equipment specifications, capital costs, construction schedule, execution plan, and performance indicators, and will provide an engineering basis for subsequent financing, the final investment decision, and EPC implementation.
