Perpetual Next Advances 220,000-Tonne Biomethanol Project in the Netherlands; Bilfinger Appointed Owner's Engineer

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 14, Perpetual Next appointed Bilfinger as Owner's Engineer for the DeltaTorr and DeltaNor projects in Delfzijl, the Netherlands, responsible for coordinating the next phase of engineering development and advancing the projects toward a final investment decision (FID). Located in the Eemsdelta industrial area, the projects plan to build large-scale biomethanol production facilities, with total capital expenditure for the full development scheme reaching up to EUR 1 billion.

Perpetual Next has secured approximately 16 hectares of industrial land in Delfzijl for the construction of carbonization and biomethanol production facilities. The site is classified as Category 5 industrial land suitable for high-intensity industrial development, adjacent to waterway access and industrial infrastructure, and holds priority use rights for a new loading and unloading jetty. The project plans a biomethanol production capacity of 220,000 tonnes per year.

DeltaTorr and DeltaNor together form the project's feedstock pretreatment and methanol production chain. Perpetual Next uses biomass residues such as low-grade waste wood as feedstock, first producing biochar through carbonization, then gasifying it to generate syngas, followed by syngas purification and methanol synthesis to produce biomethanol. The company had previously brought Air Liquide Engineering & Construction into its methanol synthesis technology partnership system.

As Owner's Engineer, Bilfinger will be responsible for integrating different technical disciplines and project partners, and supporting engineering solutions, interface management, and project execution preparation. This appointment marks the project's continued advancement from early-stage development to the FID preparation phase, with further deepening to follow around process integration, capital costs, construction plans, and project implementation schedules.

The project's feedstock supply system has also begun to be secured. In early September, Perpetual Next reached a partnership with PreZero Netherlands, under which the latter will continuously supply low-grade waste wood for the Delfzijl and Moerdijk projects under construction, for biomethanol and biomethane production. This feedstock pathway includes demolition wood and other wood waste that is difficult to enter high-value material recycling streams.

On the storage and logistics side, Perpetual Next selected JPB Logistics in May of this year as the preferred storage and logistics partner for the Delfzijl biomethanol facility. The current plan provides for biomethanol storage capacity of approximately 21,000 to 35,000 cubic meters, with products intended to be delivered to the storage and logistics facility via dedicated pipelines and then shipped out by inland vessel, while retaining truck loading and unloading as a backup logistics method.

Perpetual Next is currently advancing multiple large-scale biomethanol projects in the Netherlands, Estonia, and the United States. Its standardized project scheme uses 220,000 tonnes per year as the single-line production scale, and the Delfzijl project is one of its main European projects. The project's products will target the chemical feedstock and shipping fuel markets.
