en.Wedoany.com Reported - On October 22, the U.S. engineering and technology company KBR announced that it had been awarded technology retrofit contracts for two ammonia plants under AGF Nitrogen in Germany and Austria, involving a combined existing capacity of 2,450 tonnes per day. The two plants are located in Lutherstadt Wittenberg, Germany, and Linz, Austria, with individual daily capacities of 1,900 tonnes and 550 tonnes, respectively. KBR will provide technology licensing, engineering services, process equipment and catalysts, and will upgrade the existing plants using proprietary reforming technology to reduce natural gas consumption and carbon dioxide emissions.

The German project is operated by SKW Stickstoffwerke Piesteritz, a subsidiary of AGF Nitrogen, and involves the No. 2 ammonia plant with a capacity of 1,900 tonnes per day. KBR's contract scope includes technology licensing, follow-on services for basic engineering design, supply of process equipment and catalysts, and retrofit of the plant's back-end systems. The synthesis loop will be equipped with a new ammonia converter. This contract follows KBR's proprietary engineering design assignment for the plant awarded in March 2026, extending the previous engineering design work to specific equipment and system upgrades.

The Austrian project is located in Linz and operated by LAT Nitrogen, involving the No. 2 ammonia plant with a capacity of 550 tonnes per day. KBR will undertake proprietary engineering design, technology licensing, follow-on services for basic engineering design, and supply of process equipment and catalysts required for the retrofit. Compared with the German project, the Austrian contract focuses on process technology and equipment upgrades for the existing production plant.

Both plants will have their existing steam reforming sections upgraded with KBR's proprietary Reforming Exchange System (KRES) technology. AGF Nitrogen plans to use these retrofits to reduce natural gas consumption in ammonia production, improve energy efficiency, and reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The specific retrofit tasks for the German and Austrian plants will be carried out by the respective operating companies and KBR in accordance with the contract scopes.
