en.Wedoany.com Reported - On October 27, Emvolon, a US-based MIT spin-off company, completed a $22 million Series A funding round. The proceeds will be used to deploy its first commercial-scale modular bio-methanol production unit and expand its project development team. The round saw participation from investors including MassVentures, VX Ventures, and Wagner Carbon, as well as non-dilutive funding from US federal and state government sources. The first commercial system will use waste methane gas-to-methanol technology, advancing commercial deployment on the basis of a prior pilot conducted jointly with Montauk Renewables.

Emvolon and Montauk Renewables plan to build a combined annual production capacity of 50,000 tons of bio-methanol across multiple production sites through their joint venture projects. The first commercial project is planned at the Atascocita renewable energy facility in Humble, Texas, USA, with a targeted annual output of up to 6,000 tons. The two parties previously conducted a pilot at a local landfill, converting collected landfill gas into methanol.

The modular unit uses a modified internal combustion engine as the chemical reactor, paired with standardized gas processing and fuel production systems. The equipment features a prefabricated skid-mounted structure and can be installed at landfills, dairy farms, wastewater treatment facilities, and industrial flare gas sites, using methane-rich waste gas collected on site to produce liquid methanol. The system is designed to operate independently of the public power grid.

Emvolon previously signed a multi-year fuel purchase framework agreement with commodity trading firm Freepoint Commodities, under which Freepoint obtained preferential purchase rights for up to $450 million of bio-methanol and other liquid fuels. The agreement has a term of 7 years, and as subsequent projects are built, the fuels will be supplied through Freepoint's global trading network to shipping, heavy transport, and chemical industry customers.
