Worley Awarded Engineering Contract for D-CRBN's 200-Ton-Per-Year Syngas Demonstration Plant in Belgium
en.Wedoany.com Reported - Belgian climate technology company D-CRBN has selected Worley, a global engineering and project delivery services provider, to provide engineering services for its new renewable syngas demonstration plant in Antwerp, Belgium.

The demonstration project aims to validate an electrified, low-carbon manufacturing pathway for syngas. Syngas is a key chemical feedstock widely used in the fuels, plastics, and industrial chemicals industries.
Under the agreement, Worley will undertake overall plant design, multidisciplinary engineering, safety assessments, and cost optimization studies to advance the facility into the actual construction phase. This engineering contract represents a further expansion of the existing collaboration between the two parties: Worley had previously provided conceptual development services for the facility's syngas purification process, reactor scale-up modeling, and industrial integration planning.
Gill Scheltjens, CEO of D-CRBN, stated that the project's progression into the detailed engineering design phase marks a critical transformation for the company, establishing an operational data baseline and engineering framework for its future commercial-scale deployment.
The Antwerp plant will employ D-CRBN's proprietary plasma technology to convert carbon dioxide and biomethane into circular feedstocks: using renewable electricity to break down these two molecules and reform them into high-purity renewable syngas. By electrifying the conversion process, this technology offers chemical manufacturers a pathway to directly recover captured carbon emissions and reintegrate them into the productive chemicals value chain, rather than relying on conventional fossil-based feedstocks.
The demonstration facility features a modular design that facilitates rapid deployment, simplifies maintenance, and enables smooth capacity expansion within the host industrial site.
The plant has a design capacity of 200 metric tons of renewable syngas per year during the initial validation phase, producing low-carbon syngas suitable for direct processing into sustainable aviation fuel, circular plastics, and green chemicals. The operating unit will also serve as an engineering blueprint for a planned commercial-scale facility, which targets an annual capacity of approximately 10,000 tons.
Geert Reyniers, Vice President of Innovation and Technology at Worley, emphasized that combining D-CRBN's plasma process with Worley's experience in first-of-a-kind industrial technology scale-up will establish a replicable, safe framework for building large commercial facilities across Europe in the future.
