India's BRPL Signs 25MWh Energy Storage Agreement with FlexGrid One

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 19, India's BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL) signed an agreement with FlexGrid One Private Limited to build a 12.5MW/25MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) at the Shivalik 33/11 kV substation in Malviya Nagar, Delhi. FlexGrid One is a project company under REConnect Energy Solutions. The project adopts a two-hour storage configuration and is scheduled to be commissioned around April 2027. BRPL lists this project as India's first battery storage deployment project to adopt grid-forming inverter technology.

The project was previously procured by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), acting as the tender coordinating agency, through a tariff-based competitive bidding process. BRPL's public tender documents show that the project site is the Shivalik 33/11 kV substation, and the procurement scope includes the design, supply, testing, installation, commissioning, and subsequent operation and maintenance of the 12.5MW/25MWh battery energy storage system. The project has been approved by the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC).

The Shivalik project will be equipped with grid-forming inverters. According to the technical arrangements disclosed by BSES, the system can actively establish and maintain grid voltage and frequency, and use stored energy to participate in grid operations. Under the two-hour storage configuration, the system is planned for peak load response, voltage and frequency stabilization, grid restoration after outages, and renewable energy integration. Technical support related to grid-forming inverters is provided by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) through the StoREin project, which falls under the India-Germany energy cooperation framework and is implemented with the participation of India's Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.

BRPL currently operates the Kilokri 20MW/40MWh battery storage project. After the Shivalik project is commissioned, its grid-scale battery storage capacity will increase to 32.5MW/65MWh. This signing marks the project's transition from the tender and regulatory approval stage to the development and implementation stage. Subsequent milestones include equipment supply, installation and commissioning, and commissioning scheduled around April 2027.
