T-Mobile US and India's Jio Achieve the World's First 5G SA Roaming

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 21, T-Mobile US and India's Jio announced the world's first 5G Standalone (SA) international roaming connection based on commercial networks, with Syniverse providing cross-network interconnection and roaming platform support. The connection has already been enabled in the live network environment, allowing T-Mobile users to access Jio's 5G SA network during their travels in India. T-Mobile stated that while there had been proof-of-concept and testing of 5G SA roaming in the industry, this marks the first time such capabilities have been launched in a commercial network environment.

This cross-network connection is enabled through Syniverse's global connectivity platform, with core functions including secure interconnection, signaling exchange, and roaming service coordination between different operators' 5G core networks. Syniverse employs SEPP (Security Edge Protection Proxy) capabilities in the system to protect cross-operator 5G core network signaling and provide related mediation and interoperability functions.

T-Mobile began deploying its 5G SA network in 2020, and Jio has also built a standalone 5G core network. This connection allows users to continue using the 5G SA network architecture during international roaming, and supports lower latency, higher reliability, and network capabilities for real-time communications, IoT, and enterprise applications.

Ankur Kapoor, head of network at T-Mobile, stated that the company is advancing 5G SA roaming cooperation with other international operators and plans to continue expanding support. T-Mobile has held discussions with multiple operators and will proceed with new commercial connections based on the other parties' 5G SA network and roaming technology readiness.

Mark Yarkosky, who oversees international network, partner, and service operations at Jio, stated that the two parties will also develop new services for consumers, enterprises, and AI applications around 5G SA cross-network capabilities. This cooperation establishes an international interoperability channel between T-Mobile's and Jio's two independent 5G core networks, and provides a foundation for the future cross-border use of network slicing, IoT, and differentiated services.
