Nigeria's Hotspot Secures Financing to Build 500 Community Communication Networks

en.Wedoany.com Reported - Nigeria's Hotspot Network Limited has secured World Bank-supported results-based financing to deploy communication and broadband infrastructure in 500 unserved and underserved communities. The project will build 2G and 4G mobile communication, broadband internet, and community Wi-Fi networks, equipped with renewable energy power supply facilities, with implementation carried out in collaboration with the Rural Electrification Agency of Nigeria.

The communication facilities will simultaneously carry mobile voice and data services, with network construction areas concentrated in rural and remote communities lacking adequate fixed broadband, mobile networks, and stable electricity supply. Hotspot adopts a combined deployment of communication equipment and distributed renewable energy power supply systems, with base stations, broadband access equipment, and community Wi-Fi nodes receiving independent energy supply. The project covers residents, businesses, schools, medical institutions, and other public facilities.

The project is part of Nigeria's Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale-Up (DARES) program. The World Bank approved $750 million in International Development Association financing for DARES, with the project implementation period running until December 31, 2028, and plans to leverage over $1 billion in private capital. The Japan International Cooperation Agency plans to provide $200 million in complementary financing, and the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet is providing $100 million in funding support.

DARES adopts a results-based and private-investment-driven distributed infrastructure construction mechanism, planning to provide new or improved electricity access to over 17.5 million people through solar standalone systems and microgrids, and to supply productive electricity to up to 237,000 micro, small, and medium enterprises. Hotspot's 500 community networks this time are equipped with renewable energy systems on the communication facility side, with mobile networks, broadband access, and community power supply facilities entering joint deployment.
