Goodfellow Invests Over £1.5 Million to Expand U.S. Precision Manufacturing Center

en.Wedoany.com Reported - On September 23, Goodfellow, a UK-based supplier of advanced materials and metals, announced the completion and official opening of the expansion of its precision engineering center in Columbia, Maryland, USA. The company invested more than £1.5 million in the project. The expanded facility covers approximately 15,000 square feet and is primarily intended to enhance local micromachining and precision manufacturing capabilities for advanced materials in the United States, as well as to support high-volume production of complex components.

The expanded center is equipped with a new-generation laser processing system capable of high-precision micron-level component manufacturing and handling products with complex geometries and tight tolerances. Goodfellow's existing micromanufacturing capabilities include laser micromachining, micro-hole drilling, micro CNC, laser micro-welding, laser patterning, micro 3D machining, hot embossing, and precision assembly. These capabilities can process materials such as polymers, metals, ceramics, silicon wafers, and glass, with some machining features reaching dimensions as small as 1 micron.

This expansion also strengthens Goodfellow's ability to extend from R&D and small-batch trial production to scaled-up manufacturing. The company has already secured a multi-million-dollar order from a leading global AI processor manufacturer using the newly added equipment, and the new center will handle the production of the relevant precision components. The customer's name, the specific component types, and the order value have not been disclosed.

Goodfellow plans to add up to 20 new positions as the new center becomes operational, bringing its total U.S. workforce to approximately 60 employees. The company disclosed that about 80% of its annual sales come from exports. The expansion of its U.S. production base also supports localized manufacturing for North American customers and global micromachining operations.

Goodfellow acquired U.S. micromanufacturing company Potomac Photonics in 2024, gaining its first U.S. manufacturing base and integrating its micromachining capabilities into the group's advanced materials business. Potomac's original business focused on laser micromachining, microfluidics, and high-precision small component manufacturing. The expansion of the Maryland center represents a further capacity upgrade built on the existing U.S. manufacturing platform.
