St. Louis MetroLink to Test Single-Car Trains, Saving Up to $4.8 Million in Annual Maintenance Costs

The pilot will be conducted in phases through spring 2027, with the first phase lasting two weeks, during which only one single-car train will be placed into normal passenger service on the Red Line and Blue Line. Metro Transit's preliminary estimate shows that if single-car train operation is subsequently expanded, annual vehicle maintenance costs could be reduced by $800,000 to $4.8 million.

MetroLink currently has 69 light rail vehicles and operates two lines, the Red Line and the Blue Line, with a total route length of approximately 46 miles and 38 stations, of which 27 are in Missouri and 11 are in Illinois. The Red Line connects St. Louis Lambert International Airport with Shiloh-Scott, while the Blue Line connects Shrewsbury with Fairview Heights. Metro Transit data shows that MetroLink recorded approximately 6.813 million passenger trips in fiscal year 2025.

The pilot will not adjust existing train departure frequencies or operating schedules; the core changes are concentrated on the length of individual train consists and the number of vehicles in service. During the trial, Metro Transit will continuously record passenger flows by time period, vehicle operating performance, on-time performance, maintenance needs, and passenger feedback, and will compare the operating results of single-car trains across different line segments and different passenger flow conditions.

Single-car trains will not cover all operating scenarios. On dates when concentrated passenger flows are expected, such as major events, Metro Transit will restore the regular train consist; under special dispatching conditions such as line construction and single-track bidirectional operation, the single-car train trial will also be suspended. These arrangements will be used to test the actual applicable scope of single-car consists under normal passenger flow conditions while retaining the ability to adjust capacity under peak and special operating conditions.

The pilot is planned to continue through spring 2027. The subsequent number of single-car trains deployed, the applicable time periods, and whether a regularized operating plan will be formed will be determined based on operating data from each phase. Metro Transit has not yet published itemized estimates for energy consumption, labor costs, or the service life of key components.
